EMC Delivers World's First Integrated Enterprise Storage Network Solutions

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 1, 1999--
Building the Infrastructure for a Connected World Through
New High-Availability Fibre Channel Switch,
Software, Symmetrix Systems and
Professional Services
EMC Corporation, the world's leading supplier of enterprise storage systems, software and services, today introduced the world's first integrated, large-scale, enterprise-class Storage Area Network (SAN) solution. The announcement helps customers extend the benefits of EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage far beyond the walls of the data center by consolidating significantly more information from more remote departments and business units than previously possible, into centrally managed pools of enterprise storage.
Announced today are the following major new EMC products and services:
--EMC Connectrix Enterprise Storage Network System-the world's first fully integrated Fibre Channel network connectivity solution, offering up to 64-port switched Fibre Channel (FC-SW) connectivity between EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems and distributed servers. The new Connectrix systems quadruple the number of servers than can connect to an EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage system, when compared with direct Fibre Channel server-to-Symmetrix storage connections.
--EMC Connectrix Management Software Suite-the new software helps customers simplify and manage, from one central location, the complexity of enterprise storage networks through high-level views of multiple Connectrix systems and detailed ''drill-down'' management of multiple Connectrix Enterprise Directors.
--EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems and software (see separate releases)-a complete new lineup of the world's most popular storage systems, offering the world's largest capacity (more than nine terabytes in a single system) and unparalleled performance. The new systems and software form the premier enterprise storage platform for deployment of the emerging large-scale enterprise storage network (ESN).
--EMC Enterprise Storage Network Professional Services-highly trained EMC consultants with in-depth knowledge of enterprise storage networks will navigate customers through every phase of enterprise storage network planning, design and implementation.
Michael C. Ruettgers, EMC President and CEO, said, ''EMC is delivering a level of storage network solutions today that's at least a generation beyond what other vendors are even talking about. The combination of fault-tolerant Connectrix systems, software like EMC PowerPath, EMC InfoMover and EMC Volume Logix, and ESN-enabled Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems and services gives EMC the world's broadest, most pervasive storage network solution.''
Gregor Bailar, Executive Vice President and CIO for the National Association of Securities Dealers, said, ''As the parent company of the NASDAQ AMEX Market Group, we regularly process and track, in great detail, one billion or more shares of stock every day. This massive data flow is expanding our storage requirements by almost a terabyte a month across mainframes, UNIX servers, and hundreds of NT servers. In this environment, the NASD has no choice but to demand openness, redundancy, centralized management, high performance and ease of deployment from every critical piece of our information infrastructure. EMC Symmetrix and EMC Connectrix systems epitomize these traits and will serve as core elements of our emerging enterprise storage network.''
World's First Fully Integrated ESN Connectivity Solution
With EMC Connectrix systems, the world's first fully integrated Fibre Channel-based ESN connectivity solution, EMC offers the highest level of availability for mission- and business-critical information. The ESN solution comprises:
--Connectrix Enterprise Storage Network System-houses up to two 32-port Connectrix Enterprise Directors, each offering switched Fibre Channel (FC-SW) connectivity between EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems and distributed servers. The new system delivers unprecedented levels of high availability through remote diagnostics and ''hot swappable'' redundant processors, memory, port controllers, power supplies, power inputs, and cooling systems. Failover to redundant components is immediate, non-disruptive, and automatic while resident diagnostics quickly identify and pinpoint any system anomalies.
--Connectrix Management Software Suite-helps customers simplify the management of enterprise-wide information from one central location and includes:

--Connectrix Manager software - offers centralized network management view of multiple Connectrix systems and provides integration with enterprise management systems such as CA UniCenter, Tivoli, and HP OpenView.
--Connectrix Product Manager software - allows customers to quickly manage and monitor each individual Connectrix Enterprise Director in detail.

Connectrix systems significantly enhance storage-to-server connectivity, information consolidation, and data center flexibility; maximize information availability through a fault-tolerant, self-healing architecture, and centralize monitoring and control for exceptional information and resource management.
Professional Services
The daily demands placed on in-house IS staff and the complexity introduced by enterprise storage networks increase the need for specialized services to speed migrations, reduce risk and accelerate return on investment for the business. To that end, EMC today introduced EMC Enterprise Storage Network Professional Services. Based on EMC's Storage Logic methodology, a framework for storage industry best practices, the new practice includes: ESN Assessment, ESN Planning and Design, and ESN Implementation services. Through these services, highly trained EMC consultants with in-depth knowledge of enterprise storage networks will navigate customers through every phase of planning, design and implementation. This consultative approach will help customers address future infrastructure needs and keep up with increasing levels of information management complexity, thus providing a focused way to manage information and ensure it can be leveraged by every division and every business process.
Vital elements of true enterprise storage networks include platform-independent storage systems; centralized management software; fully tested interoperability; robust online storage-to-storage data movement; storage-based security; and data center-class support. The new Connectrix ESN System, Connectrix Manager software and ESN Professional Services join the heterogeneous platform independence of EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems; ESN-enabling software including EMC Volume Logix, EMC InfoMover and EMC PowerPath; and EMC's world-class customer support to create the world's most comprehensive and integrated enterprise storage network solution.
Availability
EMC Connectrix Enterprise Storage Network System and Connectrix Management Software are available immediately and support any combination of Windows NT (Compaq, Dell, Hewlett-Packard and IBM) and UNIX (Sun Solaris) servers. Support for additional server platforms will be added as they become qualified. U.S. list prices vary based on configuration. ESN Professional Services are available immediately; prices depend on project scope and duration.
