I N T H I S I S S U E: MPT's Development Plans For 1997 2000 MHz Frequency Band Radio Service Plan Announced Telecommunications Development In Hubei For 1996 And 1997 -------------------------------------------------------------------- MPTíS DEVELOPMENT PLANS FOR 1997 During the MPT's video conference on December 23, 1996, Mr. Wu Jichuan, the minister of the MPT, proposed the following as key P&T development targets for 1997. P&T service turnover and service revenue are expected to reach US$20.45 billion and US$18.83 billion in 1997, respectively, an increase of 30% and 24% over 1996. The P&T plans to make investments of US$11.43 billion in fixed assets. The MPT's 1997 telecommunications infrastructure and service development targets are provided below: Item Growth in 1997 Capacity of local telephone switching systems 17 million lines Capacity of toll telephone switching systems 230,000 circuit terminals Mobile communication channels 250,000 channels Long distance service circuits 300,000 circuits Long distance optic cables 33,000 cable km No. of local telephone subscribers 15 million No. of mobile phone subscribers 4 million Data Communications 150,000 Telephone density 7.4% During 1997, improving both the quantity and quality of China's telecommunications infrastructure will be stressed. The high speed of development will be maintained while comprehensive communication capability will be enhanced by the construction and expansion of the networks scale, optimization of network structure, and improvement of the network's underlying technology level. During 1997, the construction of eight optical fiber cable trunks, including Beijing-Jiujiang-Guangzhou, will continue until they are put into operation. Twelve optical fiber cable trunks including Hohhot-Beihai, Xi'an-Hefei, Nanning-Guiyang-Kunming, Guangzhou-Kunming-Chengdu, Lanzhou-Xining-Lhasa will be built. The expansion of thirteen optical fiber cable trunks including Beijing-Wuhan-Guangzhou, Beijing-Tianjin-Shanghai, Beijing-Taiyuan-Xi'an, Beijing-Hohhot-Yinchuan-Lanzhou, Hangzhou-Fuzhou-Guizhou-Chengdu will be finalized and the lines will be put into operation. Twelve telecommunications hubs will be constructed or undergo continuing construction.
