Any authentication scheme worth a hoot would disconnect you if you dropped your server connection. In other words, just because you leave your browser open, does not mean that you are still authenticated. My guess is that you have your SI password saved in your browser and when you reconnect to your ISP and resume where you left off, your browser re-authenticates you without you even knowing it. If this is not the case, it means that SI does not time out your connection, which I can't believe is the case.
