Here's one for you: The Life of the Cosmos by Lee Smolin {see post #145}.
The first two chapters are excerpted at Amazon. The author reviews the current status of cosmology and presents an interesting theory of his own. This is a book of ideas, not formulas. One of the few that he gives is an estimate of scale for the simplest possible processes involving only gravity and quantum theory:

The Planck length = SQRT(hG/c^3) = 10^-33 centimeters

He says this is about eighteen orders of magnitude smaller than can be probed with current particle accelerators! Answers will not come from experiments of that type.
