"Period". Unfortunately, usage determines commonly accepted grammatical practice. That be why the talk be changin', ya know? Of course there is proper English and various dialects. This is an excellent way to separate the various classes. Otherwise we'd all be living next door to one another.

Why is there no Fowler on punctuation? Or is there one I don't know
about?


Well nothing with the erudition and humor of Fowler, but when I was a lad, there was a good, if stolid, handbook by Walsh that covered, as I recall, punctuation and grammar.
