Mao2: I can't point you to the post number. But since you are a newcomer to the thread may I recommend "rudedog" s posts. You can look them up under his name. He has discussed this before with enormous insight and knowledge.

Dell Computer to Launch Workstations With Two Intel Chips for Price of One

Of note: "Dell, Round Rock, Texas, said its Precision workstation with two Intel 450-megahertz Pentium III chips will cost $2,372. In contrast, Hewlett-Packard Co. and Compaq Computer Corp. Friday each announced a similar machine run by just one Intel microchip and priced within 5% of Dell's machine."

re: CPQ has now been surpassed in server sales by DELL
You are misinformed, CPQ sells more than twice as many servers as DELL, just in the markets DELL competes in. If you count the CPQ high end products (where DELL has no product to compete with) CPQ is about 4 times DELL in revenue terms.

This pricing is a stunt. IMHO DELL is getting desperate, pushing into sub-1K when the juice is gone, now this. I am getting concerned for their 2Q99. Still holding DELL but getting increasingly nervous by their lack of anything but weak, reactive moves.

CPQ should have a strong push in April when the innovate conference happens. This once-every-two-years event is always a big platform for Compaq to push their vision, products, and partnerships.
