Jim, Re: I was thinking about getting a copy of Linux. What are its highlights? Bad points?

Tough to install(for people with only Window/Dos/Mac background).

Re: "I was thinking about getting a copy of Linux. What are its highlights? Bad points?"

The good points are many. It is real Unix, very powerful and free.
A good example of the bad points is in administration. You really need an in depth knowledge of Unix to get it to work. With Windows, to connect to your ISP, all you need is the phone#, your user name and password. With Linux, there is an incomprehensible 66 page howto manual, and an equally long FAQ on just establishing a PPP connection! My eyeballs roll back in my head whenever I am dumb enough to try it. Obviously this has to be streamlined before most endusers will consider using it.
