Why would you say I am painting him in a bad light?

You are making it appear as though (a) Gates and Microsoft either want the company to be broken up or have admitted defeat on the issue, and (b) Gates is putting his own interests ahead of the company and is preparing to jump ship.

I think (a) is false, based on everything I have read. It imputes a defeatist attitude to Gates that I do not believe he in fact holds. There is nothing wrong with you speculating that (a) is true, but you should label it clearly as such or provide your sources.

As for (b), back in the good old days, both you and I protested that one should not draw improper conclusions from the mere sale of stock when the Microphiles accused Andreesen et al. of abandoning ship by selling off huge chunks of their Netscape holdings. I think we owe Bill the same courtesy, at least in the absence of concrete proof to the contrary.

(b) also comes across, to me at least, as bordering on an attack on his personal integrity.

Maybe you are just throwing Microsoft's own strategy of FUD back in their faces. If so, then you are descending to their level.
