Fujitsu to build assembly plant at site instead of new wafer fab

TOKYO -- Fujitsu Ltd. today said it was cutting back chip expansion plans further by delaying construction of a new wafer-processing frontend in Aizu-Wakamatsu City indefinitely.

Instead of constructing its System LSI Fab, Fujitsu said it will build a final chip assembly and testing plant at the site. That facility is slated to open by the end of the year 2000.

Fujitsu blamed the decline of the global semiconductor market for shelving the wafer fab. The firm said it will continue to develop and produce system-level ICs but at other Fujitsu fabs. The system-on-chip products will be assembled and tested at the new Aizu-Wakamatsu plant, Fujitsu said.
