Windows 98 Update to Debut on March 18

With the government's antitrust case against it still pending, Microsoft is moving ahead with a minor Windows 98 update that includes the new Internet Explorer 5.0 browser and Year 2000 Update code.

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates on March 18 plans to roll out the operating-system update at company headquarters, company officials announced today. In addition to IE 5.0, the software will ship with a Y2K update that resolves minor Year 2000 issues in Windows 98. Although these issues can result in the incorrect display of Year 2000 dates, they pose no risk of data loss, company officials said.

The software publisher on the same day will make the Internet Explorer 5.0 upgrade available for download from its Web site and allow customers to pre-order the standalone CD-ROM version of the browser for $6.95, officials said. Microsoft has not announced a retail availability date for the standalone SKU.

Retail sources briefed on the upcoming release said the Windows refresh is welcome for many reasons.

"We want it because they're going to fix thousands of bugs in Win 98," said one retailer, who declined to specify any major problems with the operating system but said its Universal Serial Bus capabilities need improvement.

Another retailer, however, said his customers will like the fact that Microsoft is integrating the new browser into the Windows 98 code because it simplifies use. "They like it much better built in," said the executive said.

Browser rival Netscape late this month is scheduled to release retail versions of Communicator 4.5 and Communicator Deluxe 4.5, sources said. The browsers are expected to sell for $29.99 and $49.99, respectively.

Retail sources said the Windows update will be available in the channel toward the end of March and early April.
