Grant any word on a SIGM codec?

They are just knocking them down one by one.
Amazing...Sigma went from "we can't get the bugs out of our own VCD chip"....to trashing the DVD market & competition in one year.

quote of the day:

''They don't have the critical mass to operate on a stand-alone basis,'' said analyst Ashok Kumar at
Piper Jaffray in Minneapolis. ''Either they have to find an alliance partner or get taken out.''

Grant, tell me more. What did Sigma say? They have a win, or are hopeful of a win? When will it ship? The Encore 5X, which is the newest Creative offering, uses the Drx2 card, just like the last offering. It still decodes MPEG-2 and AC-3 on board. If they used the Sigma Chip, AC-3 would be sent to the CPU for decode. No Sigma DVD decoder in a Creative board is on the shelf, yet...........................

What do you need to playback DVD on the PC?
To enjoy DVD on the PC, the most important component you'll need is the PC DVD-ROM drive. You will also need a DVD decoder, which can come in the form of software, like Zoran's SoftDVD, or hardware, as in the case of Creative's PC-DVD Encore Dxr2 and Encore 5x.

If you choose the software option, it is important to note that it takes a lot of processing power to decode DVD Video. Therefore, you will need a very fast CPU to complete the task. Even then, your PC's resources will be tied up with the decoding of video and audio and you will not be able to run any other software simultaneously. This means that any game that uses Dolby Digital may suffer from performance degradation.

Creative's PC-DVD Encore series does the decoding with a separate, dedicated hardware decoder; much less CPU power is needed. The picture and sound quality is also greatly improved.
