I Am Pretty Sure This Wasn't Posted> (and its good) Posted at 6:32 a.m. PST Monday, March 1, 1999 Qualcomm denies Chinese halted distribution of wireless technology SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Qualcomm Inc.'s wireless phone technology has hit ''a period of slow growth'' but the telecommunications company plans to expand in China, the company's founder said. Qualcomm founder and chairman Irwin Jacobs on Friday denied reports that distribution of its wireless phone technology in China has been halted by authorities there. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Chinese officials imposed a moratorium on distribution of Qualcomm's code division multiple access (CDMA) digital phone system, which touts better security, longer battery life and clearer reception than other types of wireless service. In 1997, Qualcomm signed a $300 million deal with Great Wall Mobile Communications for wireless headsets using CDMA. The agreement raised concerns over whether U.S. technology may be aiding the Chinese military. Qualcomm officials have said Great Wall Mobile is simply one of a number of the Chinese military's moneymaking operations including investments in hotels, hospitals and restaurants. Since late last year, China's Ministry of Information Industry has allowed limited penetration of CDMA, with only 100,000 subscribers in that country. CDMA use has been the subject of bureaucratic infighting as Chinese authorities debate over the direction of the nation's future wireless phone standards. Factions of the Chinese government also have been trying to curb the military's commercial endeavors, observers said.
