Thread:

Gorilla and King Watch and Wait portfolio up over 5% today!! I think that we have a nice group of stocks here! I would love to add some more who qualify, so keep the recommendations coming!!

Mariner:

Regarding ATI, what market segment is it in graphics that they dominate? Personally, I see the computer graphics industry as extremely competitive and almost commodity-like in the low(er) end. With that in mind, I don't think that they could ever become a Gorilla. For them to become a king, they would really have to have something that makes them stand out from the other commodity producers. For example, DELL, though in a commodity industry, has their manufacturing model. AOL has their content and the fact that switching to a traditional ISP can be somewhat traumatical for the users qualifies them as a King. Does ATI have any distinct competitive advantage?

I think were missing something really important here by not having "baskets" in which to place our candidates. The ATI Tech nomination to the Watch and Wait portfolio is a case in point. I would agree that ATI belongs in some gorilla-king portfolio but to be true to the spirit of the GG, that same basket should also contain TDFX, NVDA, maybe even SIII. Tossing ATI into the same basket as NTAP, for example, reminds me of a game I used to play as a kid. I'd gather up a jar of black ants and toss them onto a pile of red ants to see who would win the ensuing battle. The problem is, the playing field was not even close to level, and the "home" ants would always win, had it been more of a battle of near equals the game would have been a lot more interesting, and who knows, I might have even been a billionai..., er, biologist today.

So the questions are if and how are we going to deal with the basket issue, in practical terms, on this thread? Let's make it interesting <G>
