Sony Computer says to launch 128-bit PlayStation
TOKYO, March 2 (Reuters) - Sony Computer Entertainment Inc, a unit of Sony Corp , said on Tuesday that it would launch a new version of its popular PlayStation game machine featuring a 128-bit microprocessor.

Sony Computer said that the 128-bit CPU was co-developed with Toshiba Corp for use in the next-generation PlayStation. ''The development of a full 128-bit microprocessor is the first of this kind in the world,'' Sony Computer said in a statement.

The new microprocessor incorporates two 64-bit integer units with a 128-bit SIMD multi-media command unit, two independent floating point vector calculation units, an MPEG 2 decoder circuit and high performance DMA controllers onto one silicon chip, it said.

Sony also said the new microprocessor will use Direct Rambus DRAM chips developed by Rambus Inc (Nasdaq:RMBS - news).

California-based Rambus is a developer of high-speed memory technology, which it has licensed to major manufacturers of computer memory chips worldwide for use in their products.

Hi Mile

Reflections

I have been giving some thought to the recent events concerning the Caminio delay.
What strikes me first of all is either the poor comunication between rmbs and INTC; or the sudden change of direction. At the press conference on Jan 23 Hammon announces the "2 step approach", with the 600MHz version in June and the 800MHz in September. Not 4 weeks later, the 600mhz has fallen off the map. Strange

Secondly, who or what is causing the delay? Is it really technical problems matching RDRAM's into the Caminio chip set, or is it that INTC has other more urgent problems elsewhere? I can find enough published evidence to support both cases
