Aetna May Face Court Case After Refusing Viagra Cover, FT Says

Washington, March 2 (Bloomberg) -- Aetna Inc., the biggest U.S. health insurer, may face federal legal action from men denied insurance coverage for Viagra, the anti-impotence drug made by Pfizer Inc., after a U.S. court rejected a defense motion that would have dismissed the suit, the Financial Times reported without citing sources. The suit was filed against Aetna Life Insurance Company and Aetna US Healthcare of California on behalf of men suffering from sexual dysfunction; the unnamed lead plantiff is impotent following prostrate cancer surgery, the newspaper said. Aetna and various other insurance companies have said Viagra is a ''lifestyle'' drug which is not medically necessary, the newspaper said.

Viagra became the world's fastest-growing prescription drug after its introduction last year in the U.S., Europe and elsewhere. The drug generated sales of $788 million between its debut the first week of April and Dec. 31.
