London-based Billiton continued to make "rapid progress" on development
of bio-leach processes for primary and secondary copper ores, chairman
and chief executive Brian Gilbertson said in the company's half-year
report.

Pilot plant test-work at the Chuquicamata copper mine, a division of
Chile's state-owned copper company Codelco in Chile's northern Region
II, was progressing satisfactorily, Gilbertson said.

"The interfacing of the BioCOP concentrate leaching process with
Codelco's downstream solvent extraction technology has been
demonstrated," he added.

The companies had also designed a multi-purpose demonstration plant and
carried out cost estimates jointly.
