YAHOO would want to own Amazon because it is the perfect way to tranform eyeballs/page views into direct commerce. There is a theory going around that portals may lose their importance if companies like AMZN can get into the same business. Think about it. AMZN has millions of members who spend real $$ to buy books/music etc. How hard would it be to make AMZN a DESTINATION -- offer news, sports, weather info to attract people just to send them to your bookstore.

Although YHOO has great margins, their revenue is very low compared to AMZN. And YHOO has zillions more viewers. AMZN has hundred of millions in revenue and is the e-commerce destination. Combine the two and you have a one-stop destination. After that you can forget about search -- there's nowhere else you'd want to go.
