NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Metromedia Fiber Network Inc. (MFNX) and Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) agreed to jointly build optical digital networks.

In a press release Monday, Metromedia Fiber said the companies will build Internet protocol-based internal networks within and between major metropolitan areas for corporations and government agencies.

Metromedia Fiber plans to expand its existing dark fiber network and use Cisco's high-end routers and switches, including the new dynamic packet transport product line.
