Why can't Intel ever do anything right

(Incidentally, I once tried to disable cookies and get onto a WSJ site and it also wasn't optional.)

Embedding an id into the CPU, especially one that my software friends say can be easily activated (even if turned off by the user) via a JAVA applet, answers no security issues.

Secure commercial transactions cannot be performed if everyone can get at your identity. The basis of commerce is the reasonable certainty that you are indeed whome you represent yourself to be and not someone else representing themselves as you. That cannot be done with a public id especially an unencrypted one. The CPU id has absolutely no value in e-commerce.

On the other hand it certainly has value to MSFT and that is why it is there. The rest is just a cover for Andy being on his knees again in front of Bill.

Dell attacks the low end. They are going to offer a dual Xeon starting at about the same price (plus 5%) of the price CPQ is offering the single Xeon. That Michael Dell, he's such a kidder. :)
