Zhengzhou Telecommunications Bureau Selects
Newbridge Networks for Major Digital Data Network Expansion

HONG KONG, CHINA--Networking Solution Enables Delivery of Value-Added Converged Voice and Data Services

Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN - news; TSE: NNC - news) today announced that Zhengzhou telecommunications
Bureau (Zhengzhou Telecom), a service provider that offers a wide range of voice and data services, including local, long
distance and mobile telephony and integrat ed services digital network (ISDN) to approximately six million customers, has
selected Newbridge to expand and upgrade its digital data network (DDN). The significant network expansion will enable
Zhengzhou Telecom, which provides telecommunications ser vices to one of the most populous cities in Henan province, to
respond to rapidly growing customer demand for value-added, integrated voice and data services. The agreement to provide
the networking solution was completed through Vodatel Systems, a Newbr idge(r) distributor, based in the People's Republic
of China.

Since its installation in 1994, the Zhengzhou DDN network has faced explosive demand to support advanced voice and data
services. As such, Zhengzhou Telecom was seeking a flexible networking solution to support this explosive growth now and
well into the
future.

Zhengzhou selected the Newbridge solution because of its high scalability, reliability and the unmatched network and service
management capabilities provided by the Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(tm) 46020 Network Manager.

''The superior network and service management capabilities provided by Newbridge and the ease with which service
providers can expand their networks and migrate simply to a multiservice, multi-access, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)
platform were key fac tors in Zhengzhou's decision to select Newbridge Networks,'' said Roger Fung, Executive Vice
President, Asia, Newbridge Networks.

The MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager is a cost-effective, highly scalable networking solution capable of centrally
monitoring and managing multiple-traffic networks and providing network partitioning - a feature that sets it apart from other
vendor s' offerings. Network partitioning enables service providers to segregate their networks into customer-specific
partitions and offer advanced-featured virtual private networks (VPNs) to their customers. These superior network and
service management capab ilities, will enable Zhengzhou Telecom to protect its initial network investment and expand its
network to quickly and effectively meet the diverse needs of its customers.

Other equipment ordered by Zhengzhou Telecom for its network expansion includes: the 3600 MainStreet(r) Bandwidth
Manager, the 3645 MainStreet High Capacity Bandwidth Manager and the 3630 Drop/Insert Primary Rate Multiplexer.

Since 1992, Newbridge Networks has installed networking equipment in more than 150 public DDNs throughout the
People's Republic of China, the first of which was in the city of Shanghai. The Company continues to provide equipment to
meet China's rapidly i ncreasing demand for advanced digital networking services.

''Our relationship with Zhengzhou Telecom represents a significant installation of Newbridge advanced private line equipment
in Henan Province,'' continued Mr. Fung. ''We look forward to continuing our work with other service providers in Henan
Province and
throughout China to develop customized, highly scalable networking solutions for their customers' diverse and changing
needs."
