Unfortunately, if you recall your Kubrick, it was Peter Sellers in the form of Dr. Strangelove who saved humanity. It was his suggestion for underground mineshaft shelters that gave everybody hope at the end.

Group Captain Mandrake, I presume, was one of the lost.

That might be a good scenario for gold, anyway....no gov't when you came out, you would have to start with some medium for exchange. But that might take eighty to one hundred years to develop that sort of barter economy. Still not a good investment in the short run.
