Latin America PC Market Grew 10 Percent in 1998, According to
GartnerGroup's Dataquest

San Jose, Calif., March 1, 1999—The Latin America personal computer market grew 10 percent in 1998, with shipments of almost 3.7 million units, up from 3.3 million units in 1997, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group Inc. (NYSE: IT).

"Once again, Mexico posted strong unit growth, ending the period with a 24.5 percent regional market share, further reducing its traditional gap with Brazil."

"Regional sales by Dell grew 94 percent over 1997, presenting a key issue among other vendors regarding the future viability of direct sales in an area dominated by increasingly fewer distributors and large amounts of resellers," added Mr. Anavitarte.
................

The portable industry excelled in 1998 with 29 percent growth over 1997 with the outstanding performance of IBM, followed by strong market penetration by Compaq and Toshiba. "Considerably lower prices, similar technical capabilities to deskbounds, and creative marketing were key for this industry," said Mr. Anavitarte.

Brazil exceeded expectations in the fourth quarter, closing the year with 7 percent growth over 1997. Chile's annual growth was only 4 percent. Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela experienced lower sales in 1998 because of lack of credit and skyrocketing interest rates.

Argentina posted the second-largest growth in the region in 1998 with 10.5 percent.....
