Splitrock Services, Inc. Expands
Contract with Nortel Networks

-- Splitrock purchases additional Nortel Networks' Versalar 5399 Remote
Access Servers to scale their dial access network to over 350 points of
presence (POPs), exceeding 120,000 ports --

BOSTON, March 2 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) today announced that
Splitrock Services, Inc. has initiated another phase of its network rollout, once again drawing upon
remote access solutions from Nortel Networks.

The expanded purchase agreement with Splitrock calls for the deployment of additional Nortel
Networks' Versalar 5399 Remote Access Servers (RAS); a total deal that exceeds US$15 million.

''In continuing our nationwide ATM-to-the-edge buildout, Splitrock once again selected the Versalar
5399 as a solution that offers a reliable and stable remote access service,'' said Todd Wilkens, vice
president of engineering, Splitrock Services, Inc. ''Nortel Networks has been vital in easing Splitrock
through a substantial network build.''

Splitrock's creation of a high speed ATM backbone designed to support emerging Internet applications
such as data, video and voice, has centered on the strength and performance of the Versalar 5399
since their initial purchase at the end of 1997. In order to meet the expanding customer need for
high-speed Internet access, Splitrock's latest rollout includes a move to tier two and tier three POPs,
with an expansion that includes more than 350 POPs nationwide.

''Nortel Networks considers remote access strategic to delivering our vision for offering the
best-in-class, IP-optimized networks that support telephony, data and video applications,'' said Paul
Gustafson, vice president and general manager of Nortel Networks' Network Access Division. ''The
Versalar 5399 remains a critical component to our overall remote access product portfolio. Splitrock is
creating a leadership position in offering the most advanced and highest speed access capabilities to
their customers.''

Working with Nortel Networks, Splitrock has also implemented the I.T.U. V.90 worldwide standard
across their entire network. ''We have found Nortel Networks' solutions to be reliable and stable, and
have found their 56k technology improves our overall performance,'' said Wilkens at Splitrock. ''Nortel
Networks continues to deliver either x2 or K56flex schemes, in addition to the V.90 standard.''

With support for more than 2300 simultaneous dial-in users accommodated in a standard eight foot
cabinet, the Nortel Networks' Versalar 5399 RAS provides Splitrock the scalability and port density
necessary to provide a high level of service to Prodigy's extensive client-base.

Splitrock's network, utilizing the Nortel Networks' Versalar 5399 technology, continues to be
recognized with A+ ratings in connectivity within studies conducted by Inverse Network Technology,
Inc. (www.inversenet.com), an independent firm that measures the overall performance of ISPs in the
United States.

Headquartered in The Woodlands, Texas, Splitrock Services Inc. is a leading next generation network
service provider. With more than 350 ATM switches, the company has built the largest commercial
ATM network in the U.S., carrying more than one billion minutes per month. Splitrock offers multiple
