Robert Douglas;

I particularly, like your last comment. I believe, that time will be next year for SEG.

Robert,

What is a snipe hunt? Hunting snipers? Scary thought...

You raise some good points.

Margins on final product: Gateway already functions on a similar jit/bto model. Compaq is moving towards it. Margins attributable to efficiencies will shrink and market share gains enabled by that model will come under threat. Their share of a growing market will stay flat or grow at a decelerating rate in conjunction with a gradual elimination of pricing advantages. Unless Dell has some other ace up its sleeve it has to reinvent itself in some way, shape or form to maintain earnings? I dunno....I follow Dell and the boxmakers from a distance so I might have this all askew.... You're right though, the dynamics of technology and the mechanics of a screwdriver assembly don't exactly mesh...

Skipping over your claims to provincialism <g>, or should I say side-stepping? - you really think we'll go back to a design & manufacture landscape? Serious bond bear are you? :) What kind of interest rates do you think that kind of reversion to form will need?
