The emphasis with certificates is on securing specific and generic data communications (email messages etc.) vs with Digital Me the emphasis is on securing crucial identification information. One is the equivalent of the envelope you seal your letter in. The other is the equivalent of the safe deposit box you put your most expensive jewelry in.

In the implementation I favor, a network based digital identity vault, it is true that the vault would issue the equivalent of certificates but for e-commerce.

Be careful of that salesman, he might just try to sell you a PentiumIII.
