Patrick, re VLSI, FWIW, I talked to a major tech analyst last summer, when LSI and VLSI were talking, and he said, if a merger were to go through, LSI would have to replace all of VLSI's upper management. Didn't sound that good. A fish rots from the head first, or something like that (but it spreads from there). Yuck. Wouldn't a buy of VLSI make LSI tank? I think it's a moot point anyway. This from LSI over the weekend:

VLSI was wooed last year by LSI Logic Corp., a
Milpitas-based
semiconductor maker, but the deal fell apart. ''We did actively
explore the acquisition of VLSI but we decided not to (do it)
because we did not see it as fitting in with our long-term
strategy,'' an LSI Logic spokesman said. He said the company
has
no intention of renewing its pursuit of VLSI.
