Jon - A tidbit of info: One of the primary reasons that calculators and watches moved from LED to LCD was power draw for LED's.

There are two reasons why LED's will be used for traffic lights and other applications.

One is power consumption. Correctly engineered, the LED's will use significantly less electricity than the current lamps.

More important is longevity. When was the last time you saw an LED wear out? Compared to the savings from not having to buy and staff as many bucket trucks to change bulbs, the savings on electricity is relatively low.
