Netscape is dead! Long live Netscape!

Netscape is a tragic example on what can happen to a company that relies on it's "intellectual property" for revenue. The value of this property exists only in people's heads, and the company can have it's revenue stream cut off at the whim of the public. Netscape was dead before they ever released any source code to the public, and their death was the result of being over-reliant on browser sales (and subsequent unsuccessful attempts to reposition themselves as a server or portal company).

The Free Software Foundation, in contrast, never relied on intellectual property for revenue. As a result, it's products were never driven by marketing demands. It has (probably) the most software products of any organization (ever) and has the most popular compiler on the planet earth.

AOL is still going strong. They sell a service. I think the world would be a better place if more companies sold services rather than shrink-wrapped software that undermines the consumer's freedom.
