John -- China is a world unto itself. In their world they see the need to build and project their power in a way the Japanese refrained from doing -- since the last war. MA's recent visit comes at a time of growing tension. China will not appease the US the way Japan has always pretended to -- and it is unclear who will blink first. It is unclear what path the conflict will take, and open warfare is not likely to come for some time, and certainly not until economic means are exhausted. NEM is a hedge against the economic manouvers as they become more serious about building an independent financial system -- do you think China wants to base their currency on foreign currency reserves?
