Linus Torvald makes his money on the payroll of a privately held company called Transmeta

Commercial companies in the Linux operating system arena make money by selling value added versions of the basic operating system, and by selling support services. There is nothing to prevent Corel or any other company from writing commercial programs for Linux and selling them.

That Corel chose to give away the initial Linux release of WordPerfect shows that it wants to keep the free software community on its side. Besides allowing it to test the waters on demand, the move generated a lot of good will and positive publicity.

Hope this answers your question.
