I can assure you that the company I fly for has both tested and certified that all of their BA and Airbus AC are fully Y2K compliant. Like I stated earlier, all of the INS, GPS, and FMS sytems aboard modern generation AC are self contained.

I believe there's a GPS rollover problem that had not yet been fully handled as of a few months ago. The GPS rollover date is not 1/1/00, however. I think it's sometime in August (not sure about this). This is, of course, a satellite issue, not an avionics issue, but the result would be the same.

Nonetheless, I agree with you on your main point--this hysteria about planes falling out of the air is a joke. And, as for ATC going without radar--I think it'd be good for you flyboys to have to go back to your primary training and try to remember the correct sequence for position reporting <g>. It'll provide some good entertainment on the radios.

>>> Like I stated earlier, all of the INS, GPS, and FMS sytems aboard modern generation AC are self contained. In addition, most of the systems run independently of each other, therefore the argument of one or many systems being dependent on each other is false. <<<

Somewhere there is a system time clock. These are not independent of that. Also, they need to be initialized after power outages. Also, the GPS receivers have to do a table look-up using the time and date to get satellite ephemeris to know where to look for satellites. There are likely more interfaces.

The statement all must work or much will fail was pertaining to the general infrastructure such as banking, all the vendors, I think something like 100,000 for GM etc. But hey, at this point what we need to do is take precautions, and look for short selling opportunities.
