The television I look at differently. I [don't] believe in Web surfing on TVs. I don't think people are interested in typing on keyboards and leaning forward and trying to interact with their televisions. I believe in one-button, one-click interactivity on the television set: See an ad, one click, buy the product, or [with] one click, go to
another. Or, say you're watching CNN election news, and they start [announcing the results from] Georgia. You can say, "I want to see [the results from] California." Youclick a button and bring [them] up. It's interactive TV. I almost hate to say that because five to 10 years ago, people had a bad taste in their mouths [about interactive
TV].

People have been talking about interactive TV for decades. But it's here now. We're going to be able to do this. One-click interactivity. People channel-surf today; it's nothing more than that. [Now] you'll have a choice, and that's going to be killer, and [the whole thing will] be funded by advertising.

Our best estimates are [that] in the year 2000, $288 billion will be spent on television advertising. Today, the advertising [money] spent on the Web [is about] $2 billion. During the next two years, how much of that $288 billion do you think could shift into supporting interactive TV? [That could be] a dramatic shift.

ATHM which now costs $40 monthly will become basic tier for a reason. In order for e-commerce and interactive advertising to explode, EVERYONE must have Internet access. This is all part of Malone's plan. I have been saying that ACTV can achieve ATHM numbers recently. I believe it can be done, will be done and that Liberty EXPECTS it to be done. Leo Hindery has often said that "Everyone one is going to get a digital set-top box whether they want one or not".
Don't surprised to see some kind of deal between ATHM and ACTV.
Steve Gelsi is very aware of ACTV.

E-commerce, advertising revenue to take up slack

AtHome is promoting "seamless interfaces" between TVs,PCs, pagers, and hand-held computers. Web access on TV is "not about typing in RL's" for Web pages, but instead providing "data-enhanced video."

"The (digital) set top box is about a TV-like experience," he said. "It's about accessing the Web and putting it into an easy-to-use context."

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- At Home CEO Tom Jermoluk said Monday he sees his
firm's service fees "trending toward zero" as e-commerce and advrtising revenues grow. Jermoluk predicted At Home (ATHM) would offer a free version of its online shopping and information service
to its cable TV subscribers, instead of the existing $40 monthly service fee.

At Home will probably still offer some upper-tier services for a fee, but it will grab more e-commerce and ad revenue seen as the Web shifts to broadband capabilities, he said."
