Chinese Consumers Favor Major Brands
Xinhua English Newswire

Famous brand-name products have basically taken control of the Chinese marketplace and sales of lesser known goods are dropping, according to the State Statistics Bureau.

A recent market survey showed that 10 famous color TV brands have 80.5 percent of the domestic market while the top ten washer producers have 91.3 percent of the market, refrigerators, 91.6 percent, air conditioners, 76 percent, and video compact disk (VCD) players, 81.5 percent.

Many lesser known brands are running into difficulties and some have faded from the scene. The survey found that, against this backdrop, buying is concentrated on household electric appliances that are under consumed.

A study of the country's major department stores has found a large increase in sales of personal computers, fax machines, VCD players, and air conditioners, and large-capacity refrigerators and electric appliances show potential.

Official statistics show 99.9 percent of consumer goods either over-supplied or with supply and demand equal.
