zuma rk,

Hey, thanks for not branding me as one of those scummer shorts. I view them as just a tad better than an IRS audit. This is a new side of the fence for me......I'm not sure I like it.

I think Peapod has a tough road to hoe even as a grocery store...and that they are up against some heavyweights who could jump into this side of the grocery biz....and make things really hard.

Peapod only has 94,000 members....or "heads"....and they are having some retention problems also.....I think. So I don't believe they can leverage their website into a cash cow by hyperlinking to other sites.....and this is where the internet crowd sees the real money flowing in from......linking to other streams of revenue.

Therefore....I think the "internet premium" in this case is a false one.....and Peapod should be valued like a grocery store....and a speculative one at that. I think 1x sales is generous as a value.

I think there is some validity to this viewpoint......Many "internet stocks" are now being divided into groups.....those that deserve an internet premium and those that don't.

I went short 400 shares of Peapod the day that broker called me...demanding that I buy the stock from him that moment...(stock was $8.50)....So far, it seems that I made the right choice......But it is the wacky world of the internet...so anything can happen.

What do you think of this article (http://www.redherring.com/insider/1999/0303/news-groceries.html)
and the potential for whole foods to kick netgrocer's butt with a superior cost structure? Do you think any players will cooperate with amazon (or even get an investment like drugstore.com did) anytime soon? I think Whole Foods is well positioned - yuppies often visit quaint little specialty shops or simply eat out to get fresh food. Whole Foods will certainly be able to grow more quickly than ppod although the two aren't really direct competitors.
