mg,

My feeling is that those who stay at HP rather than pursue outside alternatives do so because of the culture (work's challenging but not too demanding, everyone is really nice, little political infighting, regular salary increases, apparent stability). The result is little "outside the box" thinking, and then they hire McKinsey at $1-2M per month to figure out what's not working. (And BTW, McKinsey staffs the job with the former classmates of HP employees!).

Obviously, I could go on at length. Bottom line, your point about deadwood is right on and very well said. I don't know that an outsider is going to be able to make any quick changes.

I was thinking last night that a bold move would be to merge with another valley company and bring in a lot of new mgmt. My runners up are Intel and Applied Materials. My favorite would be Cisco. Cisco+HP would have the potential, IMO, to be the world's biggest company in 7-10 years.
