Infoseek to Ship Ultraseek Server 3.0 for Linux; Infoseek's Award-Winning Enterprise Search and Index Solution to Support Growing Market Demand for the Linux OS

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 2, 1999--Infoseek Corporation (Nasdaq:SEEK) today announced the immediate availability of Ultraseek(TM) Server 3.0 for the Linux operating system.

The announcement was made during the LinuxWorld conference taking place at the San Jose Convention Center from March 2-4. The Ultraseek Server Content Classification Engine (CCE), an Ultraseek Server add-on that organizes intranet and Web site content into categorized topics for easy browsing and searching, is also now available on Linux.

The Linux OS, already popular among developers, engineers and IS administrators, is gaining a loyal and growing user base within the enterprise as a Web and workstation platform. Its momentum is generally attributed to three key strengths: fast performance, enviable uptime record, and the fact that it is open source software, so users have access to the source code for customization or support.

In addition, the OS is free of licensing charges. Linux is also compatible with a range of hardware platforms. Recent market figures show the new OS running on 8 to 10 million computers worldwide.

"We're pleased to see that Infoseek is entering the Linux space with Ultraseek Server," said Marc Ewing, chief technical officer of Red Hat Software, developers of the Red Hat Linux distribution of the Linux operating system and development tools for Intel, DEC Alpha and Sun SPARC platforms. "High quality, enterprise Web server products such as Ultraseek address growing demand and reinforce Linux as a world class enterprise solution."

"We have seen a rapid growth in demand for the Linux platform from enterprise customers, many of whom have been asking for us to add Linux support to Ultraseek Server," said Andrew Feit, vice president and general manager of Infoseek's software division.

"With its performance, scalability, and administrative ease, Ultraseek Server is a natural search solution for Linux. Furthermore, our support for Linux, along with Windows NT and Sun Solaris, demonstrates our multi-platform commitment to customers."

Ultraseek Server 3.0 for Red Hat Software's Linux Distribution

Ultraseek Server 3.0 and the CCE add-on are available immediately for Red Hat's Linux 5.1 distribution (or later) and offers the searching power, performance and ease-of-use Ultraseek is known for. Full details are available at the Infoseek Software Web site at software.infoseek.com.

Ultraseek Server 3.0 was originally released in November, 1998, and added key enhancements in several areas, including the ability to index documents created in the Extensible Markup Language (XML), the ability to easily manage indices and URLs on mirror sites, support for date range searches, and new language support.

Pricing and Availability

Ultraseek Server 3.0 is available immediately for downloading for the Linux OS. Infoseek has established a flexible licensing price structure, starting at $995 for 1,000-document sites, $4,995 for 10,000-document sites and subsequent price breaks for cost-effective handling of up to millions of documents on a network. There is a surcharge for CCE and for foreign language versions. A free 30-day trial version is available now at software.infoseek.com.
