John,

I think it's 1966, not 1974. (see my post to John Hauser).

The only evidence I have as far as the daytrading cushion is what I see on Nasdaq Level II every day for Dell. Sure does look like alot of daytrader activity coming into to buy the dips. Also, I seem to recall a couple of business articles stating that daytraders account for 30-50% of daily Dell volume (see recent Forbes article on daytrading.) The rest of it is the instincts I've developed with 30 years of investment experience. (You may want to get Trufflette's opinion on this also, since she watches Dell as much as I do.)

Take a look at the oil drillers in the early 1990's. Nobody wanted them even with P/E's of 5 (same as today.) I'm not suggesting that Dell will go that P/E. Just saying that investors are finicky.

As far as the 5 year arguement goes, I think we'll look back at these years as the greatest stock mania in the history of this country.

Look back at some of my posts in January. I mentioned "reversion to the mean". It doesn't mean the market has to tank. It means I expect the market to be at these levels 10 years from now.
