<G> The first time I sat down at a "computer" it was a card punch. In 20+ years that followed we
went to "character cell" terminals, "graphics" terminals, "programmable" terminals, "smart"
terminals, PCs w/ terminal emulators, "X" terminals, workstations, Mega-PCs, JavaStations,
web-client terminals (WebTV), thin-clients, ... which pretty much brings us back to where we
started ... just short of the card punch. Remember Stuart Alsop? Predicted the last "mainframe"
would be shut off (what was it?) 1988 or so? (He laughs about it harder than anyone.) So. I don't
know about big-brother... but, the big-iron box is alive and growing in 1999. And the "clients" are
getting thinner... and soon... puff!

Unrelated... but interesting. I just read in one of the trade rags that there is an estimated $7 trillion
worth of commerce world wide annually in items that are less than $5. And, there is nothing on the
web that is sold for less than $5... <just thought that was food for thought>
