Maurice , I think I'm going to start calling you the answer man because there isn't a topic or a situation that goes by that you don't have the answer for .

I think you and Ramsey must of had the same reading teacher. Now you say I'm denigrating dogs because I said my Mexican friend works like one. I wasn't positive of the meaning so I looked it up and it means to defame or belittle.

To say a person works like a dog actually compliments the dog because everyone knows how loyal and hard working any dog is. For you to say I embarassed or belittled the Dog because I compared him to my Mexican friend was not a good choice of words on your part.

The rest of your rant isn't worthy of my comments.

OT Democracy

<<PS: Hay, Americans say they love democracy, but I'd be interested to see what they think of the proposition that the whole world be run as a democracy. You know, each Chinese, Indian and Brazilian having an equal vote on the running of the world. I suspect they'd be a bit unhappy about that.>>

Actually, Mqurice, the idea of a pure democracy (everybody gets to vote and everyone's vote counts the same) scared the bejeezus out of America's founding fathers, which is why they jiggered our constitution to prevent one from happening. Usually, I think they made the right choice, because most people are too ignorant about most things to make an informed decision most of the time.

I'm not saying we Americans are stupid, which implies an inability to learn. I'm saying most of us are ignorant, an observation that merely says that we do not know as much as we think we do about as much stuff as we might. Many Americans revel in their ignorance, which is stupid.

(Did you know half of all Americans score below average on intelligence tests?)

The real genius, in my humble opinion, about the American system of government is the system of checks and balances. The Executive must share power with the Congress and the Courts. So no one person or group of people can go off half cocked (or fully cocked, for that matter.) So when the President Clinton got caught with his pants down, so to speak, he could not simply tell Congress to look the other way or or get lined up against the wall and shot. There have been plenty of examples of countries where that would have happened.

Many even today.
