Taiwan Semiconductor sees 20 pct rise in '99 sales

TAIPEI, March 3 (Reuters) - Taiwan's leading microchip maker, Taiwan Semiconductor
Manufacturing Corp , said on Wednesday it expects sales to jump 20 percent in 1999 due
to a gradual recovery in the global semiconductor industry.

''Since global wafer foundry production value is expected to grow 20 percent this year,
Taiwan Semiconductor should be able to see a 20 percent increase in sales this year,'' chairman Morris Chang was quoted as
saying by the firm's spokesman.

Taiwan Semiconductor's 1998 sales stood at T$50.2 billion, and a 20 percent rise would mean more than T$60 billion.

Chang said semiconductor industry had recovered and dynamic random access memory chips should have the biggest growth
of all microchip products.
