3Com Corp. Shares Bid Down At 26 1/4 In After-Hours Trading

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--After-market players bid down shares of 3Com Corp. (COMS) Tuesday to 25 1/2, below its Nasdaq close of 27.

On Tuesday, 3Com predicted third-quarter sales of $1.41 billion down from $1.42 billion, and earnings from ongoing operations of about 23 cents, below analysts' estimates of 36 cents a share. The company said its PC original equipment manufacturer sales were dampened by an
slowdown in the U.S. and Latin American enterprise markets.....

.....Martin Pyykkonen, an analyst at CIBC Oppenheimer, said 3Com has been hurt by declining PC prices. As PC prices fall below $1,000, Mr. Pyykkonen said, component makers such as 3Com are under increasing pressure from manufacturers to cut prices. "3Com is feeling the pinch," he said.

Mr. Pyykkonen also suggested that 3Com is losing market share among small- and medium-size businesses, its traditional strength, to rival Cisco Systems Inc. But Mr. Benhamou said 3Com has actually been gaining share in most of its markets.
