Gizelle, thanks - great article.

Everyone should read this, all 7 segments of it (you need to click
on a link at the bottom of each segment, to get to the 'next'
segment... 7 times - but it's worth it!).

I most enjoyed the last 2 paragraphs, talking about past
dealings w/ AOL:

Q: "AOL is demanding access to your network."

ATHM CEO: "Yeah. If that's the way they want to go, then it's
kind of like, "[OK, it's] flamethrowers at 40 feet." I kept saying,
"We're ready to do a deal." The problem was [that] they never
wavered. Their deal was simple: "You guys be a dumb pipe. We own
the subscribers, and we own the content." You know what? That
doesn't work anymore! If you want to share the subscribers, I'm
all ears. If you want to share the content, I'm all ears. But
don't cut me out of the equation. What, do you think I'm stupid?

I tried one deal after another, and [AOL always] came back with the
same deal. I finally said, "Forget it." [Then] they [went] to the
regulatory thing. And they lost. They didn't stop the [AT&T-TCI]
merger. Now what do you want to do? Fight another two or three
years? Slog it out in Congress? Or do you want to [make] a damn deal?
I'm ready to listen, but they [have] to get off the "dumb transport"
thing."

That was the most detailed article into the vision of @home that I've ever seen. And what vision! TJ gets it, theres no better way to put it than that.
Two comments I find interesting and I'd like feedback on.
1) It appears to me that @home is going to be be a part of the physical conduit for AT&T's voice. Do we get part of the revenue too, or is TJ being too liberal with the word "we"?
we're the ones who are upgrading the plant, putting in the [proxy servers], the routers, the switches, all the
digital technology. The upgrade we're [doing] is [what AT&T] needs to do to deliver local telephone [service]. The routers and the modems to the home are the same for telephony and data

I still haven't figured out exactly where ATHM stops and TCI/T starts, now I'm more confused than ever.
2) The targeted advertising he discusses is both amazingly powerful and amazingly unnerving. I cant believe there wont be a severe reaction when people realize that one company is buiding a central database on exactly what web sites you go to, what purchases you make, what TV shows you watch, and concievably even what phone #'s you dial, all with the express purpose of getting you to buy more stuff through them.
Excite has been doing this a little already, but then its only what you do within the Excite universe they watch and also Excite doesnt know who you are and where you live.
Shades of "1984" in 2001?
