Through the Silicon Valley Grapevine ------------------------------------- Totally Hip to be showcased at a major invitation only Apple/SDF sponsored investment event briefing in Silicon Valley on March 10th? Hello there Eric. I may have some really good news as to why things have been really quiet on the THW front. Then again I may be just guessing as to the outcome of this. You ask why THW has been quite and no response to the recent financial news. Many people have heard the rumors of a recent Macromedia buyout attempt of Totally Hip and then the subsequent comments reported in MacCentral and MacWeek from the THW Chairman. It said that Totally Hip will stay the course by remaining as an independent software developer with the goals of developing the best QuickTime tools. Perhaps we should keep in mind that Totally Hip has always stuck to a plan and we all know that critical mass of software companies takes time and proper funding. Well perhaps Totally Hip is going to make their funding moves soon and the following information that I just obtained from a friend may help explain what is about to happen. This is all before the Apple announcements about QuickTime 4 in April. Do we see a pattern here? The reasoning may be that Totally Hip wants things to be quiet because something big is maybe about to happen? Companies usually don't want to make noise before a big event. Hot on the heals of THW winning another best of show and Apple Computer using LiveStage to create interactive QuickTime content on Apple's Web site to show off the hot new iMacs, we have another tidbit of real good news for Totally Hip from the Silicon Valley GrapeVine. Why no news from THW about their attendance at this event? My guess is that they know that major Institutional Investment Firms and Venture Capital investors don't like hype. Totally Hip may well be in the right place at the right time next week on March 10? My friend works for a major VC firm in the valley and they will be attending an Apple sponsored event on March 10th. They were invited by Apple Computer senior executives. Apple has a vested interest to make sure smaller Macintosh developers get funded so they can grow. Apple knows they can no longer be dependant on Macromedia, Adobe, and Quark so they must help others to grow. So this is probably why Apple is starting to show off Apple developers such as Totally Hip. My friend said one of the drawbacks of Mac only developers is that they are Mac only and have no expertise on Windows which is a must to consider investment, but Totally Hip is the only Macintosh and Windows developer with award winning products attending this event, and this sets them apart from the other 6 small Mac only developers. Who will the VCs and Institutional investors flock towards at this event? If THW has just won 3 "Bets of Show" awards and they are the only ones that develop for Macintosh and Windows and have award winning QuickTime based products, I guess maybe we are onto something here. Here is some information taken from the e-mail that was sent to my friend at the VC firm. Many VC firms and Institutional investors will have there analysts and investment managers participating at this Apple sponsored Macintosh Technology Briefing and Showcase on Wednesday, March 10th. It is described as a very special event that the Software Developers Forum have created in partnership with Apple Computer. It says that this event will provide a selected group of the Silicon Valley investment community with an overview of the dynamic Mac market, presented by Apple's leadership, and a preview of 7 hot young companies developing for the Mac platform. And as mentioned to me by my friend, Totally Hip was selected by Apple senior management to participate in this major showcase event. Why? He said that LiveStage and WebPainter are very important to Apple and QuickTime. This also is backed up by my friends in the know at Apple. Basic Agenda for the event: - There will be a 1 hour presentation by Fred D. Anderson, CFO, Apple - There will be another presentation by Clent Richardson, VP Worldwide Developer Relations, Apple - There will be another presentation by Peter Tamte, Senior Director, Consumer Marketing, Apple and former creator and Executive Director, MacSoft Then the 7 companies which includes Totally Hip will participate in the Company Showcase We all heard Brian Leeners say on TV in January that the Chairman Randall McCallum is a master at presenting Totally Hip's software products at trade shows and events; and we all know that the Totally Hip Chairman will be on tour all over the USA starting in March with a complete focus on promoting Totally Hip and their products. Perhaps this is the event that kicks it off? Good timing. Who is the Audience? --------- I have been informed that this is a special, by-invitation-only event and is not open to the public. The invitation list includes over 40 venture capital firms, strategic investors, and their key partners in the Silicon Valley investment community. To bad I can't attend this event. But it looks as though Totally Hip will get the exposure that they need at this event. Being patient has a way of paying off.
