A little extra info on 'Call Waiting' from Newsbytes: When the customer receives a call, a dialog box appears on the computer screen. If Caller ID information is available, that is shown, said Scott Wharton, vice-president of marketing for VocalTec. The customer can take the call using the speakers and microphone of a multimedia-equipped personal computer, Wharton told Newsbytes.

VocalTec will charge carriers $250 per port for the call-waiting capability, which also requires that VocalTec's Ensemble Architecture be installed. Ensemble Architecture can support phone-to-phone, fax-to-fax, and PC-to-phone communication using voice over IP technology, Wharton said.

More features are planned in the future, he added, saying, "This is just the beginning."

To use the service, a customer needs VocalTec client software that can be downloaded free from the Internet and distributed freely. Carriers and ISPs can set their own monthly charges for the service, and may offer it as a free add-on to their basic services, Wharton said.

VocalTec is promoting the service to carriers by pointing out that it will allow them to terminate more telephone calls -- by making it possible for calls to get through while a subscriber is using the Internet -- which generates revenue because of reciprocal compensation charges for traffic between carriers. The company is promoting it to ISPs on the basis that it will help encourage their customers to stay online longer, since they will not have to worry about missing incoming phone calls.
