Orion, I think you are right that reliability is something that should be plugged by the PhoCos -- if xDSL is, in fact, more reliable. I'm no expert here, but I'm not sure that DSLs won't be subject to some of the same problems as cable.

I live in a very rural area, and lightening (and sometimes just rainstorms) wreaks havoc on my phone lines. Sometimes the phone goes out for no apparent reason, and it is usually a failure in one or more of the in-line amplifiers needed out here in the hinterland. DSL will require some similar above ground equipment that will be susceptable to similar problems as cable. Even ADSL, with no exterior equipment, is dependent on consistent electrical characteristics of the copper; if moisture or induced EMP influence the echo, impedance, or connection resistance of the copper, it could cause problems.

So, maybe not touting the reliability of xDSL isn't an oversight.
