The thrust of your arguments are that ZIP has established it's brand name, and has a large enough installed base such that consumers will demand the ZIP in their computers.

Actually, I think it's more than just an established brand name. That may be valid for a first time purchaser, but someone who already has a Zip pretty much has to get another one when buying a new PC. I don't care who makes the processor, the hard drive or the CD-ROM on my next computer. However, when it comes to transferring my tax files, my digitalized photo album, or any other good-sized files, I'll have no choice other than a Zip.
