The point is that "the right to bear arms" meant something at the time, but may not be relevant today. I doubt very seriously it meant "people should be allowed to carry assault weapons to the grocery store" for example. Everything needs to be taken in context, and the right to bear arms has been exploited by the NRA and gun lobby such that everyone thinks it is a god-given right in this country for everyone to carry a gun and I don't believe that to be the case.

Having said that, if you cling to the notion that because it is written we need to take it literally, then we would need to apply that mode of thought to the entire constitution. We just had a debate on whether lying about sex was a "high crime and misdemeanor". It certainly is NOT a high crime in today's world, now is it? But if you try to force me to take the gun issue verbatim, with no reevaluation as to whether "the right to bear arms" should be modified in any way, then the literal def of "high crime" in todays world must stand. Clinton should not have been impeached. You can't have it both ways.
