Global Chip-Making Capacity Falls 2.5% In Oct-Dec 1998
Thursday, March 4, 1999

TOKYO (Nikkei)--The worldwide production capacity for mainline integrated circuits declined in the October-December period of 1998, falling 2.5% from the July-September period, according to a Semiconductor International Capacity Statistics report released Wednesday.

The drop -- the first since the polling of major chip makers began in 1994 -- reflects the recent shutting down of production lines amid a slump in global demand.

Weekly production capacity for metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) ICs was about 1.48 million units, calculated in terms of 6-inch wafers.

Suggesting a recovery in demand, however, capacity utilization was 81.7%, up nine-tenths of a point from the preceding period, when utilization hit a record low.
