I am sure that a Pastor does pay Income tax. Is there anyone reading this that knows for sure. Again, this exists NOT FOR PROFIT. The gas station, drug store, pool hall, book store, food store, they are all FOR PROFIT. Yes, I know many people think a church IS for profit. Well, if they are, they are not a church. The people behind them usually end up in jail!

Well TP, I agree. Don't let churches off. Don't let places that help crippled children off either. Sanctuaries for abused women should have to pay also. Abused kids, make 'em pay.

If tax exemption were limited to churches, you might have a case. However, tax exempt status is granted to a variety of corporations that engage in broadly charitable activity. Colleges, museums, community outreach programs, and the like are tax exempt. Alumni associations that are independent corporations are generally tax exempt. My wife works for a professional association, and it is tax exempt, because it earns no profits, does little lobbying, and engages in numerous educational activities for its members. Also, in order not to be biased, the requirements for tax exempt status are not too stringent. The only additional advantage extended to churches is the clerical exemption, but that is hardly worth arguing about.
