Isn't it? Had Intel introduced the 550 MHz Pentium III now, then Intel's clock speeds would have jumped 100 MHz all at once.

With AMD having trouble yielding at 450 MHz, Barrett probably decided that a 40% clock speed advantage would be too much. I'm sure he wants to give AMD a little breathing room to get the K7 out.
